Occupation data

The occupation data are produced according to the National Occupational Classification [NOC] 2021 version 1.0.

Occupation codes are based on write-in descriptions of the respondents' job title and main duties/responsibilities. Incomplete or vague write-in responses can reduce the accuracy of the codes assigned, particularly for the most detailed levels of the occupation classification. For example, when ‘sales’ is provided as a description of main duties or responsibilities, any one of the codes corresponding to sales associate, sales supervisor or sales manager could be assigned.

The potential for inaccuracy in occupation codes is elevated for smaller domains, when increased sampling variability also impacts the accuracy of estimates. In such situations, users are advised to consider using broader occupation categories.

Data users should be aware that there could be some incompatibility between occupation and employment income as both concepts have different reference periods; the week of May 2 to May 8, 2021, and the year 2020 respectively. Moreover, employment income includes income from all jobs worked at, or during the year 2020, whereas respondents were to report only one occupation, the one for which they worked the most hours. Census 2021 National Occupational Classification (NOC) code exception

The code and title "00018 Seniors managers - public and private sector" are not found in the NOC 2021; this category includes codes 00011-00015. This grouping was implemented as a result of complexities in distinguishing the nuances between codes during the coding process.

Median income data quality suppression

Median income values have been suppressed to '...' where the number of records does not meet the minimum threshold to calculate the statistic or the statistic did not meet data quality thresholds.

Instructions to maximize the use of this interactive tool

Chart explanation:

The interactive diagram is used to portray sections of information that represent a whole.

The visualization shows the occupation, median employment income, and the number of individuals within the selected occupation group. The colours within the diagram represent the various occupations. Within each colour, the darker versions of the colour are representative of higher median employment income within the occupational category selected.

Choose information of interest from the drop down menus to narrow the focus of the interactive diagram by selected characteristics: Occupation; Median employment income groups; Highest certificate, diploma or degree; Geography; Age groups; and/or Gender.

Chart functionality:

To select a specific occupation, click the desired occupation (by either the National Occupational Classification [NOC], 2021 code, or by category of the occupation) from the "Occupation" drop-down menu.

The "Occupation filter" may be used to filter occupations contained in the "Occupation" drop-down menu. For example, by entering the occupation of "judge" into the "Occupation filter" text box, the user can return to the "Occupation" drop-down menu, pull down that menu, and view the requested occupation. The occupation will be filtered within its hierarchy as it relates to the National Occupational Classification [NOC] 2021. Users may wish to consult the National Occupational Classification [NOC] 2021 Version 1.0 to view the codes, categories, and groups to gain a better understanding of the terminology related to the classification of occupations, which will allow the use of the appropriate text in the "Occupation filter."

To select a specific median employment income group, click the desired income group in the "Occupation filter – Median employment income groups" drop-down menu.

To select a specific level of educational attainment, click the desired level in the "Highest certificate, diploma or degree" drop-down menu.

To select a specific geography, click the desired geography (Canada, province, territory or census metropolitan area) in the "Geography" drop-down menu.

To select a specific age range, click the desired range in the "Age groups" drop-down menu.

To select a specific gender, click the desired gender in the "Gender" drop-down menu.

Hover over the interactive diagram to view the NOC code and category title appear above the diagram, along with information on the median employment income, number of individuals, and percentage of all occupations displayed inside the interactive diagram. Data will be presented as well, based on the drop-down selections.

This interactive diagram shows the proportion of employed labour force in each occupation category, as well as the median employment income of the employed labour force who worked full year, full time and reported employment income in 2020. Selecting an occupation from the chart will display the median employment income, number of individuals, and percentage of all occupations in the centre of the chart. Data views are available for Canada, provinces and territories, and census metropolitan areas (CMAs), as well as for highest certificate, diploma or degree, age groups and gender. Two filters are available: one to filter the occupation list and another to filter occupations by median employment income. Text typed into the "Occupation filter" will filter the items showing in the "Occupation" drop down menu.

Changing any selection will automatically update the page content.
