The Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) is an excellent example of a cost effective method for improving data resources for Canadian postsecondary institutions. With this program, participating institutions pay an annual subscription fee that allows their faculty and students unlimited access to numerous Statistics Canada public use microdata files, databases and geographic files. Use of these files is limited to academic research and teaching purposes.
To find out more about the DLI, visit our website at: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/dli-ild/dli-idd-eng.htm, e-mail: dli-idd@statcan.gc.ca.
Statistics Canada is committed to serving its clients in a prompt, reliable and courteous manner. To this end, the Agency has developed standards of service which its employees observe in serving its clients. To obtain a copy of these service standards, please call Statistics Canada toll free at 1-800-263-1136. The service standards are also published on www.statcan.gc.ca under 'About us' > 'Providing services to Canadians.'
Statistics Canada has been operating a World Wide Web site on the Internet since March 1995. The Talon site was developed as a flagship service for the broadest possible audience. Statistics Canada's World Wide Web site has become one of the most important access points to the Agency for the general public. Currently over 2,000,000 hits are received on the Talon site each day.
Through the Talon site, Statistics Canada serves the general public by providing free information concerning Canada and its people, and information on the products, services, metadata and documentation it produces. This site also provides paying clients with a gateway to selected products and services.
The Talon Site Committee was created specifically to address the dissemination of information through the Internet. The Committee is consulted on broader issues of policy and planning, oversees the structure of the Talon site, and recommends and reviews presentation standards and content quality.
The 2006 Census Internet release strategy is based on the Internet being the primary dissemination vehicle for 2006 Census products. This strategy will include the 'populating' of the Community Profiles on the day of release with selected data for municipalities (census subdivisions), counties (census divisions), provinces and territories, and Canada. A variety of additional free tables will also be available on the day of release and users will be later provided with numerous data for specific variables. Navigation through census data is possible using topics, release dates, an A to Z list of variables, geography, and catalogue numbers. A new interface provides the needed flexibility for the user to select levels of geography and specify column content where a drop-down list exists.
All these data are supported by a wealth of documents and census reference products. Links to Summary tables, The Daily and CANSIM are also available.
